12 Volt Battery

How A 12v Battery Works

Oct 20, 2009 Jeremy Glennon

The 12 volt battery is one of the most flexible batteries available. Learn what makes a 12v battery so flexible and useful.

A battery is a device that stores electricity for use later. In the simplest terms, it takes the chemical reactions from two dissimilar materials to create voltage. For example, lead-acid batteries use plates of lead and plates of lead dioxide that are submerged in electrolyte, sulfuric acid, and water solutions. The result is a chemical reaction that produces electricity.

The 12 Volt Battery

The 12 volt battery is often seen as the most flexible battery. This is because it can be used for many different applications and can be made in many different sizes and shapes. For example, they can look like a AA battery or a car battery, or be used for kids toys or for vehicles like cars and boats. These batteries can also be made to be rechargeable or to not be rechargeable. All-Battery.com is a destination for all battery types.

Size of the Battery

The size of a 12 volt battery can range in size depending on the amount of time that is needed to produce a certain current (typically referred to as ampere-hours). The size, therefore, is one indicator of the total amount of charge a battery is capable of keeping and delivering at the battery's rated voltage. They can be bulky and heavy, like those found in vehicles or on smaller batteries, as found in children's toys.

Use of the Battery

The 12v battery is used for applications that have a large need for energy in order to work properly. This is the reason that it is common for vehicles to use 12v car or vehicle batteries. Also, smaller items like kids toys need a battery that can supply large amounts of voltage and at the same time be small enough to use for a child's toy, so a 12v battery would work perfectly for this.

In addition, this type of battery can be used in a rechargeable form, which is often recommended if the product is used a lot. This is because a 12-volt non-rechargeable battery can be expensive if they have to be purchased frequently.

Over time, manufacturers have made advances to battery technology to be able further reduce the size while maintaining a large amount of energy over time. In addition, the technology for rechargeable batteries have increased. This was a huge hurdle that was overcame, for example, with making computers mobile. Because of the reduction of the 12 volt battery, laptop computers are able to be used virtually anywhere on a long lasting rechargeable battery. Now batteries are being advance for the purpose of being able to help operate hybrid and electric vehicles.
